Flats have a fan following

Topic starter

Fashion seasons can be a little perplexing, especially if you live in a city like Bangalore. One day you feel you’re bang in the middle of the monsoons already and the next day, when the sun’s out and shining its brightest, you’re cursing yourself for misjudging and wearing a full-sleeved cardigan to work. However, if there’s an item that’s popular, come rain or shine, it’s got to be flat footwear.
They are everywhere, from fashion runways to street corners. Celebrities are flaunting the trend and closer home, Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma, have shown us how to wear this style of footwear. If shoe trend forecasts are to be believed, we somehow don’t seem to be getting enough of flats this time around.
“I love my heels but I’d rather not venture out in them given that we’re on the cusp of summer and monsoons. Flats are an excellent choice for work wear and if you’re worried about not being able to wear them to an evening do, you only need to look around for a dressy pair to jazz up your outfit,” opines Rashee Gupta, an intern with a fashion house.
According to designer Niyati Manoj, “It’s time to indulge in sparkly and studded flats, dual tone suede sandals, t-strap designs, flats with fringe textures, ankle strap flats, sandals in pastel shades and in floral or fruity prints. Team these up with skirts, skinny jeans, feminine dresses, or even a pair of shorts and you’re good to go.”

If you’re all for the Greco-Roman inspired footwear, the gladiator flats are for you. Ankle straps, sling backs that have countless lattices on the foot, mid-calf tie-ups, zip-up net gladiators, the leather fringe type and the chunky ornamented ones are trending. Interestingly, you don’t need to buy these in black, brown, or tan, anymore. “This season is all about new textures, croc skin, and also about pop colours like electric blue, bubblegum pink, coral, and metallic shades. These can be worn with well-tailored skirts of different length,” she informs.
Ballet flats will always have a fan following. This year, we suggest you buy a pair of lace-up ballet flats that are oh-so-cute. They’re perfect as work wear or as casual wear. “I’d cast my vote in favour of pony flats, pointy-toe, leather slides, and printed espadrilles. Flatforms are also pretty cool and versatile,” says Prerna Kumar, a collegian and fashion enthusiast.
While there are so many girls who swear by loafers and moccasins, this is the season for smoking slippers that are incredibly stylish and look best when worn with skinny jeans. They are available in bright shades, metallic colours, vivid animal prints, sparkly detailing, or with fun and quirky motifs on the vent, and are not just for the college-goers. Apart from looking trendy, they’re extremely comfy too.
If you’re treading the ethnic route and opting to wear a sari with flats, stylists recommend bejewelled slip ons, thong sandals in a contrasting shade, and kolhapuri chappals. Those who prefer to wear churidhar/salwar kameez, can team their outfit with a pair of metallic kolhapuris or with embroidered mojris.
The stores are flooded with so many choices and the discounts you get for shopping online are truly alluring. So if you’re of the belief that Cinderella is proof that a pair of shoes can change your life, go get yourself a new pair of flats while they are still the trend du juor!
