1: Why We Do Not Demand Democracy

We participate in the struggles against evictions, foreclosures, cuts, and all the abuses we go through daily. We create social centers, libraries, periodicals of analysis and counter-info, community garden...s and events. We take direct action, attacking the symbols of our oppression such as police, politicos and banks. Thus we do not demand democracy.

We believe that all that is to be demanded is freedom, without putting limits on our desires. "Democracy" and "freedom" are often taken to be synonyms, but democracy always comes down to greater social control-- it's a dictatorship through other weapons, a State which lies to us and forces us to participate in the very domination we endure. In all the world there is not a single democracy in which the people are free-- this is not due to their corruption, but is rather a result of their own operation.

Like all States, democracy is based on the centralization and monopolization of decisionmaking. It's very much the same when we all participate in these decisions, because such massive assemblies are easy to manipulate. The person who has the microphone, the people who are eager for the leading role, will always be with the majority with the minority always silenced. In the Plaça de Catalunya we are creating a true democracy, and this our great error. We are reproducing the same roles that exist in a parliament, we are creating the progressive politicos of tomorrow.

Imagine a Plaça de Catalunya with diverse assemblies, where everyone could launch initiatives without going through a centralized and stagnant meeting, thus letting everyone experience participation in self-management rather than remain spectators. We can organize millions of initiatives, more fluidly, without having to go through committees easily dominated by "specialists". We don't need others to dictate what we can do.

We are not satisfied with only one voice as the centralized assembly, because it's hardly better than the daily silence of capitalism. We want a plaça full of voices, of assemblies, of conversations. We're truly interested in the weaving of connections between everyone, but we'd like to do so in a different way: through the solidarity of struggles and not the homogenization of ideas.

destroy democracy, sow the seeds of freedom

‎2: And after Sunday, what?

In Tahrir Square, after the dictatorship fell, people realized that it was just the beginning. Although it did not appear in the press, there followed a series of strikes and occupations of factories and other pla...ces. Felling the dictatorship was only a step to open the struggle without the State massacring everyone.

In the Plaça de Catalunya, if we cut down the monopoly of political parties and the electoral farce, what will we have achieved? Nothing more than the opening of new opportunities to fight and get what we truly want: the autonomy of our lives and the end of exploitation and social hierarchies.

We wish to collectivize the wealth of society, as our grandparents did in the Revolution of 1936, as well as in the insurrections of Figols and Casas Viejas, and in the commune of l'Hospitalet in years prior. The dictatorship destroyed these struggles, but not our desire for freedom. Afterward democracy maintained and intensified the social and economic changes brought on by the dictatorship.

If we put an end to the circus of politicians, we'll have the opportunity to realize the dream of autonomy and collectivization. Of course, this implies a difficult struggle with much resolve, commitment and perseverance if we really want to solve the problems we're suffering. They'll call us "violent," they'll repress us, and they'll try to assign us new leaders and politicians.

Therefore it is essential:
- not to negotiate with the rich and powerful
- to support the prisoners generated by repression
- to respect diverse ways of carrying on the struggle
- to take the streets and to take responsibility to sustain ourselves through mutual aid

It is not easy, but it is possible. The road is long, and while our dream of freedom continues to live, we will be more alive than ever.
